Specialty Contact Lens and Post-Surgical Care 

Dr. John Gelles, a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, is the director of the specialty contact lens division at The Cornea and Laser Eye Institute - Hersh Vision Group and the CLEI Center for Keratoconus in Teaneck, New Jersey. 

His clinical work is dedicated exclusively to specialty contact lenses and surgical co-management.  Dr. Gelles is primarily focused on keratoconus, corneal ectasia, and other corneal and ocular surface diseases.  Some of the corneal conditions  he focuses on are keratoconus, ectasia, post-refractive surgery complications, severe dry eye, ocular trama, and patients who have undergone intacs, corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) and corneal transplantation. 

He is an adjunct clinical instructor for State University of New York College of Optometry (SUNY) and New England College of Optometry (NECO).  In addition, he is clinical investigator for various clinical trials at CLEI and is a consultant for multiple technology and ophthalmic companies related to corneal disease and specialty contact lenses.  Dr. Gelles is an executive board member of the International Keratoconus Academy and an advisory board member for the Gas Permeable Lens Institute.   

His expertise in this subspecialty has allowed him to achieve and continue achieving fellowship status with various academies and societies.  Dr. Gelles is regularly invited to lecture both locally, nationally and internationally on specialty contact lenses and keratoconus at optometric and ophthalmologic meetings due to his expertise in fitting KC lenses.   

Dr. Gelles' passion is to aid individuals affected by complex corneal and ocular surface diseases (such as keratoconus and severe dry eye) through the utilization of advanced contact lenses, treatments, and therapies in order to improve quality of life. “My goal is to provide an unmatched level of care to ensure the best possible outcomes and ongoing care for individuals with complex corneal and ocular surface conditions.  Working with Dr. Hersh and Dr. Chu allows the CLEI Center for Keratoconus to provide comprehensive and collaborative corneal care at the highest level.   Utilizing the most advanced technology and latest treatments available at our office will ensure the best outcomes are not only achieved but also maintained."
